California Colleges, Universities Mulling Ways To Expand Role of Nurses in Primary Care

In October 2010, the Institute of Medicine and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation released a report calling for significant changes in nursing education to help expand nurses’ role in primary care.

The California State University and UC systems are working to scale up their nursing education programs and prepare new graduates for coming changes in health care delivery.

In a California Healthline Special Report by Deirdre Kennedy, experts discussed efforts to implement some of the recommendations outlined in the IOM/RWJF report.

The Special Report includes comments from:

Bonnie Castillo, director of government relations for the California Nurses Association;
John Rowe, IOM committee member and professor at Columbia Universityâs School of Public Health; and
Heather Young, dean of the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC-Davis (Kennedy, California Healthline, 3/9).
