California Hospitals Begin Submitting Reports on Compliance With Seismic Safety Standards

California hospitals recently filed reports with the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development detailing their progress on meeting state seismic safety requirements.

State law calls for hospitals to replace or update buildings at risk of collapse during an earthquake. Some hospitals have faced difficulty complying with the mandates because of the costs involved with retrofitting facilities.

In a California Healthline Special Report by Kelly Wilkinson, experts discussed hospitals’ efforts to improve seismic safety.

The Special Report includes comments from:

  • Paul Coleman, deputy director of OSHPD;
  • Charles Meade, former study director at RAND; and
  • Roger Richter, senior vice president for professional services at the California Hospital Association (Wilkinson, California Healthline, 11/10).

The complete transcript of this Special Report is available as a PDF.
