CalPERS Rolls Out New Initiative in Hopes of Controlling Health Care Costs More Effectively

CalPERS has teamed up with Blue Shield of California, Hill Physicians Medical Group and Catholic Healthcare West on an effort to control health care costs and improve health care quality.

A California Healthline Special Report by Pat McConahay includes comments from:

  • Juan Davila, senior vice president of network management for Blue Shield of California;
  • Greg Franklin, assistant executive officer for health benefits services for CalPERS; and
  • David Lansky, president and CEO of the Pacific Business Group on Health.

The effort is intended to provide comprehensive health care services using a “virtual integrated model.” Other efforts call for using price transparency and purchasing power to control costs (McConahay, California Healthline, 5/5).
