Diane Meier of the Center to Advance Palliative Care Talks About Goals of Treatment Approach

In part one of a two-part conversation with California Healthline, Diane Meier — professor of geriatrics and palliative medicine at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine and director of the Center to Advance Palliative Care — said that palliative care focuses on relieving symptoms and stress for patients with serious illnesses.

Meier noted that palliative medicine includes hospice care and end-of-life care, but also can provide support for other types of patients with critical illnesses.

According to Meier, it is important for patients, families and physicians to understand that many of the patients who could benefit from palliative care are not at the end of their life (California Healthline, 7/26).
