Telemedicine Network at the Forefront of Schwarzenegger’s Agenda for Health IT

California is pushing a plan to link more than 300 health care providers through a statewide network. Michael Liang in the governor's office and Jana Katz Bell at UC-Davis spoke to California Healthline.

In a California Healthline Special Report, Michael Liang — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s (R) deputy secretary for information technology — discussed California’s proposal for a telemedicine network.

The California Telehealth Network would connect 319 health care sites across the state as part of a three-year pilot program to help patients in rural areas access health care providers.

Schwarzenegger has called the initiative a top priority for his administration, and the state is seeking funding from the Federal Communications Commission to back the project.

The California Healthline Special Report also includes comments from Jana Katz Bell, assistant dean of the UC-Davis School of Medicine and a developer of the UC-Davis Center for Health and Technology (Rebillot, California Healthline, 5/14).
