With the election less than two weeks away, California voters must choose between two gubernatorial candidates who offer very different visions for the state.

That is especially true when it comes to health care.

Democratic Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom imagines guaranteed health coverage for anyone — regardless of their income, medical history or immigration status. Republican businessman John Cox wants to limit government involvement and let the free market address the rising premiums and costs hitting the pocketbooks of many Americans.

For example, Newsom is an advocate of single-payer, and endorsed a bill — which stalled in the state legislature last year — that would have created a government-run health care system for all Californians.

To such government programs, however, Cox has exclaimed, “God, no.” He warns that more government involvement would be disastrous for California.

Samantha Young, the California politics correspondent for California Healthline and Kaiser Health News, discussed the dramatic differences between the two candidates’ health care positions Tuesday on KVPR’s “Valley Edition” show.
