California Leads In Pharmaceutical Payments To Doctors

California leads the country in total payments accepted by doctors from pharmaceutical companies and medical device manufacturers for promotional talks, research and consulting, and meals, according to Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Open Payments data compiled and published by ProPublica. On a per capita basis, California is second after Massachusetts, according to the data, which covers the period from August 2013 to December 2014.

In general, physicians who receive more in payments from the pharmaceutical and medical device industries prescribe more brand name drugs, a ProPublica analysis determined.
