According to data from the Commonwealth Fund, the average annual cost of covering a family under an employer health plan in California rose 57 percent, or $6,552, from 2006 to 2015. The average employee contribution to those plans rose by 51 percent, or $1,573, during the same period — though it dropped 6.2 percent, or $309, in 2015.
