Assembly Health Panel Approves Single-Payer Health Care Proposal

On Tuesday, the Assembly Committee on Health approved a bill (SB 810), by Sen. Mark Leno (D-San Francisco), that aims to lay the foundation for a state-run, single-payer health care system, Capital Public Radio's "KXJZ News" reports.

Leno said funding for the measure would come from shifting $200 billion that Californians spend on private coverage to the single-payer system.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) previously rejected two similar single-payer proposals and is expected to veto the latest measure if it reaches his desk.

SB 810 now goes to the Assembly Appropriations Committee ("KXJZ News," Capital Public Radio, 6/29).
