Audit: Improper Medicaid Provider Reimbursements Have Nearly Doubled Since FY 2013
Improper Medicaid provider payments have nearly doubled since fiscal year 2013, according to an HHS financial audit released this month. According to the audit, improper Medicaid payments have increased from 5.8% of payments made under the program, or about $14.4 billion in FY 2013, to 9.78% of payments, or about $29.12 billion, in FY 2015. In a blog post addressing the increase, CMS CMO Patrick Conway said the hike could be the result of difficulties state Medicaid agencies have with new provider screening and enrollment requirements enacted under the Affordable Care Act.
