Ballot Measure To Fund Health, Transportation Programs Considered in Santa Clara County
Santa Clara County officials are considering placing a half-cent sales tax measure on the November ballot to pay for county health programs and transportation projects, after a poll found voters might not support two quarter-cent tax initiatives, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
County officials have been privately negotiating a combined "general" tax that would require a simple majority vote at the ballot. A ballot measure that specifically states how proceeds from the tax would be spent would require a two-thirds majority vote.
The possible combined measure could include a companion advisory measure outlining specific spending priorities.
The poll indicated that voters would approve a joint measure (Witt, San Jose Mercury News, 1/26).
