California Health Care Personnel News Update for May 2013
Blue Shield of California
On May 28, Blue Shield of California announced that Leon Panetta has returned as a member of the health plan's board of directors.
He previously served on the Blue Shield board from 2000 to 2009, but most recently headed the CIA and U.S. Department of Defense (Rauber, "Biz Talk," San Francisco Business Times, 5/28).
California Department of Managed Health Care
Anthony Manzanetti has stepped down as chief counsel and deputy director of the state Department of Managed Health Care.
Manzanetti had been chief counsel since December 2011.
DMC officials have not formally announced who will replace Manzanetti (Payers & Providers, 5/30).
Hoag Orthopedic Institute, Irvine
Michael Patzakis has been named medical director of orthopedic research and education at Hoag Orthopedic Institute in Irvine.
Patzakis is professor emeritus and former chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine (Hoag Orthopedic Institute release, 5/13).
Medical Board of California
On May 8, Gov. Jerry Brown (D) appointed Phil Tagami (D) to the Medical Board of California.
Tagami serves as president and CEO of the California Capital and Investment Group.
The position requires Senate confirmation, and compensation is $100 per diem (Richman, Oakland Tribune/Contra Costa Times, 5/8).
Novato Community Hospital
Sutter Health has hired Brian Alexander as chief administrative officer at Novato Community Hospital.
He has served as the hospital's assistant administrator.
Alexander replaces Anne Hosfeld, effective July 1 (Rauber, "Biz Talk," San Francisco Business Times, 5/13).
San Joaquin County Health Commission
On May 6, the San Joaquin County Health Commission announced Amy Shin as the new CEO of Health Plan of San Joaquin, a Medi-Cal managed care plan. Medi-Cal is California's Medicaid program.
She replaces retiring CEO John Hackworth.
Shin most recently served as a principal consultant with Health Management Associates (Central Valley Business Journal, 5/6).
The Permanente Medical Group, Roseville
On May 8, Jeanne Conry -- assistant physician in chief at The Permanente Medical Group in Roseville -- was named the 64th president of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Conry also serves as an associate clinical professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UC-Davis (Rocklin and Roseville Today, 5/8).
Physical Therapy Board of California
On May 29, Brown appointed Katarina Eleby (D) to the state Physical Therapy Board of California.
Eleby has managed operations at the African American Board Leadership Institute since 2012.
