Law Extends Health Benefits for Firefighters’ Survivors
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) on Saturday signed a bill (AB 384) that provides health insurance benefits to the survivors of federal firefighters killed in action, the Los Angeles Times reports.
To be eligible for the benefits, firefighters must be California residents who are assigned primarily in California.
Assembly member Anthony Portantino (D-Pasadena) said previous California law provided such benefits for survivors of California police officers or firefighters but excluded firefighters who are permanent federal employees (McGreevy, Los Angeles Times, 9/30).
