Social media companies such as Facebook and Twitter’s Periscope have made videos simpler for people to share online, but now these companies are in a race against time to respond quickly to posts depicting self harm — before they go viral. Balancing the risks of suicide contagion with free speech, newsworthiness and other factors, these companies’ complex decisions to leave a video up or pull it down can mean the difference between life and death for people attempting suicide. New Program Gives Inmates Chance To Kick Drug, Alcohol Addictions
A select group of Ventura County inmates soon will have a drug addiction treatment option that experts say cuts the body's physical dependence on opioids and alcohol. Vivitrol, also known as naltrexone, will be available for adult inmates in the county starting this month in a pilot program overseen by Ventura County Behavioral Health. The monthly Vivitrol injection works by blocking opioid receptors in the brain and does not activate the brain's pleasure response, unlike other drug treatments such as methadone and buprenorphine.
