AFRICAN-AMERICAN HOMES: Catering to Retirees’ Interests
As African-Americans "enter their senior years with bigger bank accounts and higher expectations than any generation before them," African-American retirement homes and assisted-living facilities are cropping up nationwide, according to the current issue of Newsweek. Black developers are breaking ground on facilities that run from low-income assisted-living facilities in Florida to luxury complexes in Texas, all with one idea in mind: a place for seniors "to enjoy their golden years, surrounded by gospel music, African-American art and peers who share their life experiences." For some working class African-Americans, the Rev. Michael King said, "[l]eisure time was never an option. ... That's why communities like this are so crucial. Taking better care of our elderly includes asking them to consider what else there is to life" (Chambers/Clemetson, Newsweek, 4/19 issue).
