AIDS FUNDING: APLA Backs Ryan White CARE Act Measure
AIDS Project Los Angeles is sponsoring Assembly Joint Resolution 47 in the California State Legislature, which calls for "expeditiously reauthorizing" the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act. CARE Act funding, which is set to expire Sept. 30, supports medical and social services for hundreds of AIDS organizations nationwide. In addition to sponsor Assemblyman Gilbert Cedillo (D), 14 other Assembly members have backed the resolution. Sens. Kevin Murray (D) and Martha Escutia (D) are the principal co-authors of the measure in the state Senate. APLA Executive Director Craig Thompson said, "APLA believes that the introduction and legislative consideration of this initiative will provide an excellent opportunity for consumers of services, AIDS service and community-based organizations, providers, elected officials, government agencies and others across the state to work together toward the common goal of reauthorization of the Ryan White CARE Act" (APLA release, 3/14).
