Anthem Leads Covered California Open Enrollment Sign-Ups
So far, Anthem Blue Cross has been leading sign-ups during Covered California's second open enrollment period, according to data obtained by the Los Angeles Times through a public records request.
Enrollment under the Affordable Care Act ends Feb. 15.
Details of Enrollment
So far, 1.2 million Californians have signed up for coverage through the state-run exchange, including new enrollees and individuals who have renewed their coverage.
As of Jan. 15, Anthem accounted for 29.1% of Covered California enrollees -- the highest proportion of any insurers in the exchange. However, that share is down slightly from a 30.5% share in April 2014.
Other insurers with large shares in the exchange market include:
- Blue Shield of California, which accounted for 27.2% of Covered California enrollees;
- Kaiser Permanente, which accounted for 21.4%; and
- Health Net, which accounted for 16.8%.
The four insurers -- which are the largest in the state -- control 94.5% of the Covered California market.
However, officials note that the numbers likely will change as not every enrollee will end up paying their first month's premium (Terhune, Los Angeles Times, 1/29).
