BAY AREA: Rotary Clubs Fund Free RotoCare Clinics
The San Francisco Chronicle profiles a San Rafael-based clinic called RotoCare that provides "free medical exams and medication to homeless and low-income people." The clinic is one of 13 free clinics in the Bay Area sponsored by local Rotary Clubs. As clinic manager Heather Voss explains, "The clinic provides free urgent care for people without insurance, people who have insurance but can't pay the deductible, people who are uninsurable. Some are on Medi-Cal or Medicare but can't afford a high copayment." The Chronicle reports that the clinic is funded by the Corte Madera-based Sunrise Rotary Club, which also provides administrative and recruiting support for volunteers that provide the services. The club donates between $1,000 and $1,500 for medical and office supplies each month (Nakano, 1/8).This is part of the California Healthline Daily Edition, a summary of health policy coverage from major news organizations.
