Bustamante Considering Run for Insurance Commissioner
Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante (D) this month filed papers with the Office of the Secretary of State to create a fundraising committee to run for insurance commissioner in 2006, the Sacramento Bee reports. Bustamante, who under term limit laws is barred from seeking re-election as lieutenant governor in 2006, plans to meet with reporters Monday to address his future plans, according to the Bee. As insurance commissioner, Bustamante would oversee the Department of Insurance, which regulates, investigates and audits insurance businesses in California.
Sen. Debra Ortiz (D-Sacramento) also is considering running for insurance commissioner in 2006, according to the Bee. The secretary of state's office indicated that no Republicans have filed papers to organize a fundraising committee to run for insurance commissioner in 2006. Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi (D) has announced plans to run for lieutenant governor in 2006 rather than seek re-election (Sanders, Sacramento Bee, 9/25).This is part of the California Healthline Daily Edition, a summary of health policy coverage from major news organizations.
