Report Ranks Calif. 41st for Kids’ Well-Being, 23rd for Kids’ Health
California ranks 41st among U.S. states for children's overall well-being and 23rd for children's overall health, according to a new report released by the Annie E. Casey Foundation's "2012 Kids Count Data Book" and Children Now, the Ventura County Star reports.
According to the Star, 13% of U.S. children live in California.
The report examined various indicators of children's well-being from 2006 to 2010 (Gregory, Ventura County Star, 7/25).
Key Findings
The report found that more than half of California children live in households that spend at least 30% of their income on housing, leaving many families struggling to pay for health care, food and clothing.
The report also ranked California:
- 45th for children's economic well-being;
- 43rd for children's education; and
- 42nd for family and community (Harrington, Contra Costa Times, 7/25).
