California Health Care Personnel News Update for February 2010
California Board of Occupational Therapy
On Feb. 4, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) appointed attorney Julia Tsai to the Board of Occupational Therapy. From 2006 to 2007, Tsai served as a clinical intern for the U.S. District Attorney's Office, Eastern District.
The position does not require Senate confirmation, and compensation is $100 per diem (Office of the Governor release, 2/4).
California Health Professions Education Foundation
On Feb. 4, Schwarzenegger appointed Scott Sillers to the Health Professions Education Foundation's Board of Trustees.
The position has no salary and does not require Senate confirmation (Office of the Governor release, 2/4).
California Medical Association
The California Medical Association's Board of Trustees has voted to appoint Dustin Corcoran CEO, the Sacramento Business Journal reports.
Corcoran has been with CMA nearly 12 years, serving as the group's chief lobbyist for five years before becoming deputy CEO in Fall 2009 (Robertson, Sacramento Business Journal, 2/3).
Corcoran replaces Alfred Gilchrist, who left in January after serving only two months in the position (Calvan, Sacramento Bee, 2/3).
CalPERS
CalPERS' Board of Administration unanimously re-elected Rob Feckner to his sixth term as board president, the Sacramento Business Journal reports. Feckner first was elected to the board in 1998.
The board also re-elected George Diehr to serve his third year as vice president (Anderson, Sacramento Business Journal, 2/18).
California Regional Extension Center
On Feb. 23, the California Regional Extension Center announced that former consultant and clinic director Speranza Avram will serve as its executive director, the San Francisco Business Times reports.
The California Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems, the California Medical Association and the California Primary Care Association created Cal-REC to help health care providers purchase, implement and use electronic health records (Rauber [1], San Francisco Business Times, 2/23).
California State Independent Living Council
On Feb. 4, Schwarzenegger appointed Robert Hand to the State Independent Living Council.
Hand is a member of the California Foundation for Independent Living Centers, the Fresno/Madera Area Agency on Aging and the State Rehabilitation Council. He also serves as director of operations for the Center for Disability Innovation and chair of Fresno's Disability Advisory Commission.
The position does not require Senate confirmation, and compensation is $100 per diem (Office of the Governor release, 2/4).
Delta Dental of California
On Feb. 23, Delta Dental of California and its affiliates promoted Alicia Weber to senior vice president and controller, the San Francisco Business Times reports.
Weber has served with the company for 17 years, most recently as group vice president and controller (Rauber [2], San Francisco Business Times, 2/23).
Emanuel Medical Center, Turlock
Emanuel Medical Center recently appointed Arlon Waterson to its 12-member board, the Modesto Bee reports. Waterson is a former volunteer at the facility and also served on the Hospice of Emanuel Advisory Board.
Board member Paul Carmichael will serve as the medical center's chief of medical staff for 2010. Carmichael is a general surgeon who practices at Oasis Surgical inside Emanuel Medical Plaza (Modesto Bee, 2/21).
John Muir Health Foundation
Robert Saydah recently was elected to a two-year term as chair of the John Muir Health Foundation, the philanthropic branch of the John Muir Health system, the San Francisco Business Times reports.
Saydah is a retired senior partner with Heidrick & Struggles' health care practice. In his new role, he will lead the foundation's campaign to raise $60 million to support hospital expansion and renovation projects at John Muir Health's Concord and Walnut Creek locations (Rauber, San Francisco Business Times, 2/17).
Kaiser Permanente, Folsom
Anthony Retodo recently was appointed director of medical services at Kaiser Permanente's Folsom medical offices, the Sacramento Bee reports (Sacramento Bee, 2/1).
Marin Healthcare District
On Feb. 4, Marin Healthcare District hired Jon Friedenberg as its chief fund and business development officer, the San Francisco Business Times reports. Friedenberg most recently served as vice president of El Camino Hospital.
In his new role, Friedenberg will manage the group's business development, fundraising, marketing, planning, government relations, media relations and external communications. He also will oversee the Marin General Hospital Foundation (Rauber, San Francisco Business Times, 2/9).
Motion Picture & Television Fund
David Tillman has resigned as the head of the Motion Picture & Television Fund, the organization that runs a nursing home and hospital for entertainment industry workers, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Tillman served in the position for 10 years, but his leadership drew heavy criticism last year after the board decided to close a Woodland Hills facility.
Former Panavision CEO Bob Beitcher will serve as Tillman's interim replacement (Verrier, Los Angeles Times, 2/3).
Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS
On Feb. 1, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced 24 new appointments to the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS, including:
- Praveen Basaviah, HIV/AIDS advocate in the San Francisco Bay area;
- Michael Horberg, HIV/AIDS director at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland;
- Naina Khanna, women's health advocate and community organizer in Oakland;
- Mario Pérez, director of Office of AIDS Programs and Policy at the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health; and
- Phil Wilson, founder and executive director of The Black AIDS Institute in Los Angeles (HHS release, 2/1).
St. Joseph Hospital, Orange
Larry Ainsworth recently announced that he will be retiring in June after serving 16 years as CEO of St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, the Orange County Register's "Healthy Living" reports (Perkes, "Healthy Living," Orange County Register, 2/1).
Santa Clara Valley Health and Hospital System
On Feb. 26, Santa Clara County Executive Jeff Smith confirmed that Kim Roberts no longer is serving as CEO of Santa Clara Valley Health and Hospital System, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Smith did not elaborate on the circumstances of Roberts' transition out of the role, which she has held since 2007.
County Deputy Chief Executive Sylvia Gallegos is serving as acting director of SCVHHS (Fernandez, San Jose Mercury News, 2/26).
