California Health Care Personnel Roundup for August 2015
California Hospital Association
Joe Wilkins -- chair of the California Hospital Association's governance forum -- has been elected to the American Hospital Association's board of trustees, effective Jan. 1, 2016.
Wilkins also is board chair of St. Joseph Hoag Health in Irvine and a member of AHA's committee on governance. His term will last three years (American Hospital Association release, 8/11).
California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation
On Aug. 13, Gov. Jerry Brown (D) made several appointments to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation:
- Kristoffer Applegate (D), as secretary of legislative affairs;
- Patrick McKinney (D) , as assistant secretary of legal affairs and chief counsel; and
- Benjamin Rice (D) , as senior legal political adviser.
The positions do not require Senate confirmation. Compensation is $120,000 for Applegate and $161,532 for both McKinney and Rice (Office of the Governor release, 8/13).
California Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board
On Aug. 7, Brown made several appointments to the California Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board:
- Robert Blink;
- David Harrison (D) and
- John Sacco (D).
Brown also reappointed several members to the board:
- Barbara Smisko (R);
- Laura Stock (D); and
- David Thomas (D).
The positions do not require Senate confirmation, and compensation is $100 per diem (Office of the Governor release, 8/7).
The Children's Partnership
Mayra Alvarez has been named president of The Children's Partnership, which has offices in Santa Monica and Washington, D.C. She succeeds Wendy Lazarus and Laurie Lipper, who served as co-presidents.
Alvarez currently is the director of the State Exchange Group at CMS' Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight (Children's Partnership release, 8/10).
Covered California
Art Torres has been appointed to Covered California's board of directors, effective through Jan. 1, 2016.
Torres is vice chair of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine.
Compensation for the position is $100 per diem, as well as reimbursement for travel and other expenses (Robertson, Sacramento Business Journal, 8/25).
UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine
Kelsey Martin has been named interim dean of UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine.
Martin has served as executive vice dean and associate vice chancellor at Geffen since earlier this year (UCLA release, 8/26).
Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health
Marvin Southard will step down from his position as director of the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, effective Nov. 6.
Marvin has been director of the department for 17 years (Sewell, "L.A. Now," Los Angeles Times, 8/24).
UC-San Diego Health
Patty Maysent has been named interim CEO of UC-San Diego Health.
Maysent joined UC-San Diego in 2012 as chief of staff for former CEO Paul Vivano. She became chief strategy officer of the health system in 2013 (UC San Diego Health release, 8/24).
