Board of Registered Nursing
On Feb. 10, Gov. Jerry Brown (D) made three appointments to the Board of Registered Nursing:
- Raymond Mallel (D) was renamed president of the board;
- Elizabeth Woods (D); and
- Imelda Ceja-Butkiewicz (D).
The positions do not require Senate confirmation, and compensation is $100 per diem (Office of the Governor release, 2/10).
California Board of Chiropractic Examiners
On Feb. 14, Brown made two appointments to the state Board of Chiropractic Board of Examiners:
- Dionne McClain (D); and
- John Roza (R).

California Commission on Disability Access
On Feb. 4, Brown made two appointments to the state Commission on Disability Access:
- Michael Paravagna (D), who has served on the commission since 2013; and
- Douglas Wiele, who has served on the commission since 2013.
The positions do not require Senate confirmation, and compensation is $100 per diem (Office of the Governor release, 2/4).
California Department of Rehabilitation
On Feb. 14, Brown appointed Joe Xavier as director of the state Department of Rehabilitation.
The position requires Senate confirmation, and compensation is $142,968 (Office of the Governor release, 2/14).
California Health and Human Services Agency
On Feb. 4, Brown appointed Karin Caves (D) as deputy secretary of communications at the state Health and Human Services Agency. Caves previously served as communications director in the Office of state Sen. Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles).
The position does not require Senate confirmation, and compensation is $125,004 (Office of the Governor release, 2/4).
California Healthcare Workforce Policy Commission
On Feb. 26, Brown appointed Joseph Provenzano to the state Healthcare Workforce Policy Commission.
The position does not require Senate confirmation, and compensation is $100 per diem (Office of the Governor release, 2/26).
California HHSA Office of Systems Integration
On Feb. 19, Brown appointed John Boule as director of the California Health and Human Services Agency's Office of Systems Integration. Boule previously served as San Bernardino County director for the California Statewide Automated Welfare System, Consortium IV.
The position does not require Senate confirmation, and compensation is $165,000 (Office of the Governor release, 2/19).
California Physician Assistant Board
On Feb. 6, Brown appointed Xavier Martinez (D) to the state Physician Assistant Board.
The position does not require Senate confirmation, and compensation is $100 per diem (Office of the Governor release, 2/6).
California State Council on Developmental Disabilities
On Feb. 6, Brown made two appointments to the State Council on Developmental Disabilities:
- Sandra Smith (D) was named Area Board III representative; and
- Patrick Miller (R) was named Area Board IX representative.
The positions do not require Senate confirmation, and there is no compensation (Office of the Governor release, 2/6).
California Wellness Foundation
On Feb. 25, the California Wellness Foundation named Judy Belk as its new president and CEO, effective April 7.
Belk currently serves as senior vice president of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors (California Wellness Foundation release, 2/25).
Covered California
On Feb. 6, John Bertko was named chief actuary and director of research for Covered California.
Bertko previously served as an independent actuarial consultant and director of special initiatives and pricing at the Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight.
Compensation will be $153,600 for one year (Robertson, Sacramento Business Journal, 2/10).
DaVita HealthCare Partners
Robert Margolis he will leave his position as CEO of DaVita HealthCare Partners on March 1.
Margolis will remain co-chair of DaVita (Payers & Providers , 2/13).
Dignity Health
Dignity Health has announced that Karl Ulrich will leave his position as interim executive vice president and COO at the company.
Bridget McCarthy will serve as interim executive vice president and COO (Robertson, Sacramento Business Journal, 2/10).
Hansen Medical, Mountain View
On Feb. 9, Bruce Barclay left his position as CEO of Hansen Medical in Mountain View.
Christopher Lowe, a member of the Hansen board of directors, will serve as interim CEO (Brown, San Francisco Business Times, 2/10).
John Muir Health
George Sauter has been named chief strategy officer at Walnut Creek-based John Muir Health.
Sauter previously served as director at the Chartis Group, a health care consulting firm in San Francisco (Rauber, "Bay Area BizTalk," San Francisco Business Times, 2/25).
L.A. Care Health Plan
On Feb. 7, L.A. Care Health Plan announced that Howard Kahn in January 2015 will step down as CEO of the company (Terhune, "Money & Co.," Los Angeles Times, 2/10).
Medical Board of California
Kimberly Kirchmeyer has been named executive director of the Medical Board of California.
Kirchmeyer has served as interim director of the board since June 2013 (Robertson, Sacramento Business Journal, 2/24).
St. Francis Memorial Hospital, San Francisco
Tom Hennessy has stepped down as CEO of Saint Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco.
An interim CEO has not yet been named (Rauber, "Bay Area BizTalk," San Francisco Business Times, 2/18).
