California Health Care Personnel Roundup for January 2014
Amgen
On Jan. 9, Amgen named Michael Kelly as the company's interim CFO. He takes over for Jonathan Peacock, who left the position on Jan. 10.
Kelly previously served as Amgen's CFO of international commercial operations (Hoops, Ventura County Star, 1/9).
Barstow Community Hospital
Sean Fowler will resign as CEO of Barstow Community Hospital to accept a CEO position at a separate Southern California hospital.
Steven Foster, CEO of Deaconess Hospital in Oklahoma City, will serve as interim CEO (Fisk, Desert Dispatch, 1/16).
California Board of Pharmacy
On Jan. 8, Gov. Jerry Brown (D) appointed Allen Schaad (D) to the state Board of Pharmacy.
The position does not require Senate confirmation, and compensation is $100 per diem (Office of the Governor release, 1/8).
California Department of Developmental Services
On Jan. 14, Brown made two appointments to the state Department of Developmental Services:
- John Doyle was named chief deputy director, with compensation of $142,680; and
- Santi Rogers was named director, with compensation of$169,950.
The positions require Senate confirmation (Office of the Governor release, 1/14).
California Healthcare Institute
Todd Gillenwater will become interim CEO of the California Healthcare Institute in February.
Gillenwater currently serves as senior vice president of public policy at CHI (Fikes, U-T San Diego, 1/20).
California Institute for Regenerative Medicine
On Jan. 13, Brown appointed Joseph Panetta (R) to the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine Independent Citizens' Oversight Committee. Panetta currently serves as President and CEO of Biocom, a trade group.
The position does not require Senate confirmation, and compensation is $100 per diem (Office of the Governor release, 1/13).
CalPERS
CalPERS Chief Investment Officer Joseph Dear is taking an indefinite leave of absence from his position because of a medical condition.
Ted Eliopoulos, CalPERS' senior investment officer for real estate, will take over Dear's day-to-day duties (Buck, Sacramento Bee, 1/10).
California State Council on Developmental Disabilities
On Jan. 14, Brown appointed Virginia Sanchez (D) to the California State Council on Developmental Disabilities, Area Board XI.
The position does not require Senate confirmation, and there is no compensation (Office of the Governor release, 1/14).
Dental Board of California
On Jan. 15, Brown reappointed Kathleen King (D) to the Dental Board of California, where she has served since 2013. King currently is the CEO of the Healthier Kids Foundation of Santa Clara.
The position does not require Senate confirmation, and compensation is $100 per diem (Office of the Governor release, 1/15).
Dental Hygiene Committee of California
In January, Brown made five appointments to the Dental Hygiene Committee of California:
- Susan Good (D), who has served on the committee since 2013;
- Timothy Martinez (D), who has served on the committee since 2012;
- Nicolette Moultrie (D), who has served on the committee since 2012;
- Garry Shay (D), who has served on the committee since 2013; and
- Evangeline Ward, who has served on the committee since 2012 (Office of the Governor release, 1/15).
The position does not require Senate confirmation, and compensation is $100 per diem (Office of the Governor release, 1/21).
Gilead Sciences
In February, David Gollaher will become head of policy and public health at Gilead Sciences.
Gollaher previously served as president and CEO if the California Healthcare Institute (U-T San Diego, 1/20).
Kaiser Permanente
On Jan. 1, Bernard Tyson was named chair of the board at Kaiser Permanente.
Tyson currently serves as CEO of Kaiser (Rauber, "Bay Area BizTalk," San Francisco Business Times, 1/2).
Meanwhile, Frank Flowers has been named Riverside area medical director for Kaiser Permanente (Riverside Press Enterprise, 1/10).
Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center
On Jan. 21, Natalie Mussi was named CEO of Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center in Thousand Oaks.
Mussi previously served as COO of the hospital before becoming interim CEO several weeks ago (Scheibe, Ventura County Star, 1/21).
Sierra Vista Medical Center
On Dec. 20, 2013, Joseph DeSchryver was appointed CEO of Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo.
Deschryver previously served as the center's COO (Jayanthi, Becker's Hospital Review, 12/23/13).
UC-Berkeley Optometry School
On Jan. 22, Christine Wilmer was named clinic director and associate dean for clinical affairs at the UC-Berkley Optometry School.
Wilmer currently runs the Tang Eye Center on campus and is an associate clinical professor at the optometry school (Brown, San Francisco Business Times, 1/22).
