American College of Dentists
Steven Chan, of Just Kids Pediatric Dentistry in Fremont, has been named president of the American College of Dentists.
Chan is the founder and past chair of the California Dental Association Foundation, as well as a past president of the California Dental Association (Fremont Bulletin, 11/5).
California Dental Network
California Dental Network CEO Stephen Casey has stepped down.
Brian Watts -- director of sales at DentaQuest, the parent company of the California Dental Network -- will replace Casey (DentaQuest/California Dental Network release, 11/17).
California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation
On Nov. 17, Gov. Jerry Brown (D) appointed Joseph Moss (R) as chief of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation's contract beds unit. The position does not require Senate confirmation, and compensation is $141,204.
Brown also appointed Katherine Tebrock (D) as deputy director of CDCR's Statewide Mental Health Program. The position does not require Senate confirmation, and compensation is $156,000 (Office of the Governor release, 11/17).
California Department of Public Health
On Nov. 24, Brown made several appointments to the state Department of Public Health's Tobacco Education and Research Oversight Committee:
- Lourdes Baezconde-Garbanati (D);
- Richard Lee Barnes;
- Patricia Spratlen Etem (D);
- Alan Carnell Henderson (D);
- Robert Lee Oldham;
- Michael Ong (D);
- Claradina Soto (D); and
- Mark Starr (D).

Covered California
Kelly Green has been named director of external affairs at Covered California. The annual compensation for the position is $150,000.
Green previously served as a principal consultant for the Assembly Health Committee. She also has worked as a regulatory specialist for the California Nurses Association and as deputy director of legislative and government affairs at the state Department of Health Care Services (Covered California release, 11/17).
Department of Veterans Affairs' Central California Health Care System
Stephen Bauman has been named director of the Department of Veterans Affairs' Central California Health Care System in Fresno.
Bauman previously served as deputy network director at the VA Sierra Pacific Network in Vallejo (Fresno Business Journal, 11/17).
Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian
Patrick Anderson has been named senior vice president and CIO of Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian.
Anderson previously served as senior vice president and CIO at Ochsner Health System in New Orleans (Hoag release, 11/13).
MannKind Corp., Valencia
Hakan Edstrom has stepped down as president, CEO and director of Valencia-based MannKind Corp., a biotechnology company.
Alfred Mann, founder and executive chair of the company, will serve as interim CEO while the company's board begins an "immediate search" for a new CEO (Masunaga, Los Angeles Times, 11/20).
Palo Alto Medical Foundation
Elizabeth Vilardo has been named CEO of the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, Sutter Health's physician group in Alameda County and the South Bay area.
Vilardo previously has served as chief of medicine at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View (Rauber, San Francisco Business Times, 11/30).
Veterans Home of California, Barstow
On Nov. 23, Brown appointed Kevin McGuire (D) as skilled nursing home facility administrator at the Veterans Home of California in Barstow.
The position does not require Senate confirmation, and compensation is $109,380.
Veterans Home of California, West Los Angeles
On Nov. 23, Brown appointed Chris Walter (R) as deputy director of the Veterans Home of California in West Los Angeles.
The position does not require Senate confirmation, and compensation is $122,796 (Office of the Governor release, 11/23).
