California Universities Among Science Grant Recipients
Six California universities are among 10 universities nationwide to receive grants from the Amgen Scholars Program, a $25 million, eight-year program funded by the Thousand Oaks-based biotechnology company, Amgen, the Ventura County Star reports.
Jean Lim -- president of the Amgen Foundation -- said the summer program will provide "hands-on research opportunities" for undergraduates interested in pursuing advanced degrees and careers in science.
The program includes research projects that will team students with some of the nation's top university scientists, as well as a three-day symposium in California that will feature leading scientists in industry and academia (Scheibe, Ventura County Star, 10/20).
The California institutions receiving funding are:
- California Institute of Technology;
- University of California- Berkeley;
- UCLA;
- UC-San Diego;
- UC-San Francisco; and
- Stanford University (Rauber, San Francisco Business Times, 10/19).
