Coalition Launches Spanish-Language Diabetes Group
The West Fresno Health Care Coalition held its first diabetes support group for Spanish speakers on Monday, the Fresno Bee reports. The program is intended to help people with type 2 diabetes manage their condition through more healthful lifestyles.
Araceli Lopez, a community outreach worker with the group, said a second group might be added because of high demand for the program.
A $300,000 two-year grant from the California HealthCare Foundation funds the support group and provides home visits by diabetes outreach workers. The coalition works with Sequoia Community Health Centers, Community Medical Centers, the Diabetes Care Center and the Fresno County Department of Public Health.
Fresno County has a diabetes rate of 7.4%, compared to the statewide rate of 6% (Anderson, Fresno Bee, 4/18).
