Democrats Will Oppose Governor’s Bond Proposal
Democrats in the Legislature will oppose Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's (R) proposal for a $68 billion package of bonds over 10 years for infrastructure projects, Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez (D-Los Angeles) said Tuesday, the Sacramento Bee reports. Nunez said Democrats would seek to add funding for seismic retrofitting of not-for-profit hospitals and other projects, while reducing the overall amount of bonds issued.
"We could live with $25 (billion or) $30 billion," Nunez said at a breakfast meeting at the Bee's Capital Bureau. In addition, Nunez said the bond package should extend over a four-year period rather than a 10-year period.
Schwarzenegger spokesperson H.D. Palmer said the governor does not plan to reduce his bond proposal (Sanders, Sacramento Bee, 2/15).
