Department of Health Services Nursing Home Report Delayed
A Department of Health Services report due last Tuesday that is "expected to call for increased staffing" in California nursing homes has not yet been released, "fueling speculation that it may call for funding the Davis administration cannot afford," the Contra Costa Times reports. Gov. Gray Davis (D) signed legislation in September requiring DHS to issue the report by May 1. But DHS spokesperson Ken August yesterday said that the report "is undergoing final review," adding, "It's an important document. Everyone wants to make sure it accurately reflects the position of the department." Although August did not say when the report would be released, Assembly Majority Leader Kevin Shelley (D-San Francisco), who has sponsored pending nursing home legislation, said he "expects the report within a week" (Peele, Contra Costa Times, 5/8).
