Department of Social Services Orders Closure of Taft Assisted-Living Facility
The Department of Social Services has revoked the license of the only assisted-living facility for seniors in Taft, citing allegations of misused prescription drugs, understaffing and health hazards, the Bakersfield Californian reports.
State officials allege that Taft Residential Care Home did not:
- Pay its utility bill for six months, which nearly resulted in loss of the home's electricity;
- Relocate residents with dementia after it lost permission to house them; and
- Keep at least two caregivers on duty at all times, and at times counted a cook as a caregiver.
The home's license will be revoked effective Aug. 15.
Home owner Ruth Cantero said she will appeal the decision (Vance, Bakersfield Californian, 8/9). This is part of the California Healthline Daily Edition, a summary of health policy coverage from major news organizations. Sign up for an email subscription.
