Discovery Health Channel Series on Mental Illness Begins Sunday
A Discovery Health Channel four-part series, titled "Fires of the Mind", beginning Sunday attempts to "dispel some of the frightening myths" about four mental illnesses: schizophrenia, manic depression, anxiety disorders and autism. (Marsa, Los Angeles Times, 5/14). Narrated by actors Mariette Hartley and Edward Asner, each show chronicles real life stories of patients and their families, friends and providers. Released during Mental Health Month 2001, the program aims to increase public understanding and awareness of mental illness. Hartley, the national spokesperson for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, said, "For so many years, mental illness has been a taboo topic. In this series, we hear directly from sufferers and their families, and viewers realize that these conditions can effect any of us." The series premieres Sunday, May 20 at 7 p.m. EST.
