minorities, to undergo high-tech medical procedures such as heart
bypass surgery and pacemaker implants, according to a study of
1989-1990 California hospital records published in last week's
issue of the ARCHIVES OF INTERNAL MEDICINE. The study's authors,
who said that the "most disturbing implication" of their findings
is possible discrimination by providers, cautioned that the
findings could be due to such factors as poor access to care,
patient preference, and clinical differences among groups.
