FDA: Jane Henney Sworn In As Commissioner
Dr. Jane Henney was sworn in as head of the Food and Drug Administration yesterday by Vice President Al Gore, and pledged to direct the agency as a "science-based public service organization," AP/Nando Times reports. "We will be committed to making and applying our judgments with both fairness and firmness," Henney said, "open to all legitimate opinions and information, but knowing that the final responsibility for making each judgment rests with us" (12/15). During the White House ceremony, Gore said, "There are few positions that touch our lives in so many fundamental ways as that of the FDA Commissioner. To do the job well, it takes a person of strong judgment and clear vision; it takes a person of compassion and reason ... I believe America has found just the right person in Dr. Jane Henney" (Gore release, 12/15).
