Former HHS Secretaries Weigh In on Prospects for Health Care Reform
In an interview on PBS' "NewsHour with Jim Lehrer," former HHS Secretaries Donna Shalala and Mike Leavitt agreed on the need for all Americans to have access to affordable health insurance coverage but disagreed on the role that the federal government should play in providing coverage.
Shalala served under President Clinton from 1993 to 2001. She is now president of the University of Miami.
Leavitt served under President George W. Bush from 2005 to 2009. He is founder and chair of his own consulting firm.Â
Shalala and Leavitt agreed that Congress would pass health care reform this year, but Leavitt said he harbors questions about how much of current proposals would make it to President Obama's desk (Woodruff, "NewsHour with Jim Lehrer," PBS, 11/23).
