Fort Lauderdale Company Offers Physicians Online Prescription Refill Authorization System
ProxyMed, a Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based electronic transaction services provider for physicians, announced Wednesday the "general availability" of a Web-based prescription refill authorization service that links physician offices with retail pharmacies. The company developed the PreScribe system to improve the refill authorization process and reduce the time that pharmacies and physician offices spend on phone calls and faxes related to authorization requests. In addition, the system provides automatic documentation of authorization requests and approvals. Physician practices may use the system on a subscription basis. The system links physician practices to national pharmacy chains, such as Walgreen Co. and Eckerd Inc., as well as to regional pharmacy chains and independent drugstores. The system requires only a standard Web browser and an Internet connection and stores authorization requests in a secure mailbox, allowing physician office staff to receive and approve requests at their convenience. ProxyMed first offered a version of the PreScribe system in 1997 and processes about three million prescription transactions per year (ProxyMed release, 2/27).
