FPA MEDICAL MANAGEMENT: May Get Second Chance From PacifiCare
PacifiCare Health Systems Inc. said yesterday it is renegotiating its contracts with "money-losing" FPA Medical Management Inc., despite last week's statement to the contrary. PacifiCare said it is currently negotiating contracts with FPA to keep the company's doctors in its California network. The new agreements would permit FPA doctors to continue serving the approximately 45,000 PacifiCare members in San Diego and Orange County, PacifiCare spokesperson Ben Singer said. Current FPA contracts for the care of 100,000 PacifiCare members in California are due to expire at the end of July. "We want to have as broad a delivery system as possible," Singer said. "We want to make sure we preserve a broad-based competitive network." FPA declined to comment (Bloomberg/San Diego Union-Tribune, 7/15). Click here to read past coverage of FPA's financial struggles.
