Free Vision Clinic to Open in San Fernando Valley
The not-for-profit organization Meet Each Need with Dignity, which provides medical assistance to northeast San Fernando Valley residents, will open a new vision clinic today in Pacoima to serve the uninsured, the Los Angeles Times reports. The clinic will offer free basic vision care, including eyeglasses and eye exams, although a $2 donation will be requested. MEND officials expect 30-40 patients to use the clinic each month. "This has been a real missing link for low-income, uninsured people in this area of the Valley," Marianne Haver Hill, executive director of MEND, said. Funding for the new facility was organized by state Sen. Richard Alarcon (D-Sylmar), with the Lion's Club International donating "half of the $46,000 [in] start-up costs." Other financial contributors include the Los Angeles-area Lion's Clubs, Los Angeles County supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, the Ahmanson Foundation and an anonymous donor (Rhone, Los Angeles Times, 1/11).
