Grant Funds Foreign Health Worker Program in San Diego
The San Diego Welcome Back Center has received a $769,000 grant from the California Endowment to provide training and counseling for trained doctors, nurses, dentists and other health professionals, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
The program targets health professionals who need assistance with language and other issues to be hired into the U.S. health care system. The program aims to increase the number of health professionals working in the U.S. who speak other languages and help address a health care provider shortage in underserved communities.
Most of the doctors in the program are from Mexico and are training to become registered nurses, the Union-Tribune reports.
The California Endowment also funds similar programs in Los Angeles and San Francisco (Sanchez, San Diego Union-Tribune, 2/19).
