Gun Violence Costs San Francisco $6.2M Annually for Health Care
San Francisco taxpayers spend $6.2 million in unreimbursed medical costs on cases related to gun violence, according to estimates by the San Francisco Controller, the San Francisco Examiner reports. Overall, the city spends $31.2 million annually in costs related to gun violence.
According to Controller Ed Harrington, the annual cost of performing autopsies on handgun victims is an estimated $156,000 and 911 calls related to firearms cost an estimated $89,000 per year.
San Francisco agency heads provided the estimates as part of the city's response to a lawsuit by the National Rifle Association challenging a voter-approved ban on handguns (Lagos, San Francisco Examiner, 12/7).
