The Assembly Health Committee passed SB 162 by Sen. Deborah Ortiz (D-Sacramento) (Bill status, 6/28). The bill was amended to rename DHS the Department of Health Care Services. The measure would create the Department of Public Health to oversee certain programs that are currently the responsibility of DHS. The public health department would be headed by a state health officer appointed by the governor and subject to Senate confirmation (Bill text, 6/22).
