Healthgrades Gives California Most Hospital Excellence Awards
California has the highest number of "Clinical Excellence Hospitals" of all U.S. states, according to a 2013 report by Healthgrades, Medscape reports.
Award Details
To be eligible for the award, hospitals' performance must have been evaluated for at least 19 of 27 designated conditions and procedures based on Medicare inpatient data.Â
Healthgrades examined nearly 4,500 hospitals and deemed nearly 1,500 facilities eligible for the award.
The group awarded the 2013 clinical excellence designation to 262 hospitals, which all had performance ratings in the top 5% of the 4,500 facilities examined.
California Findings
The report found that 44 California hospitals received the award out of a total of 137 eligible facilities in the state.
The state had one of the highest percentages of eligible hospitals that received the designation, at 32.1%.
National Findings
According to the report, other states where at least 30% of eligible hospitals were given the clinical excellence award were:
- Colorado;
- Delaware;
- Iowa;
- Michigan;
- Minnesota;
- Montana;
- New Hampshire; and
- South Dakota (Lowes, Medscape, 1/15).
Meanwhile, nine states and the District of Columbia received no clinical excellence awards. The states were:
- Alabama;
- Alaska;
- Maine;
- Mississippi;
- Nevada;
- Rhode Island;
- Vermont;
- West Virginia; or
- Wyoming (Clark, HealthLeaders Media, 1/16).
