HOME CARE: Bill Would Provide Better Pay for Workers
In an op-ed in today's San Francisco Chronicle, Service Employees International Union President Andrew Stern urges state lawmakers to pass Assemblyman Mike Honda's (D-San Jose) AB 16, which would provide better training, pay and benefits for home care workers. Stern outlines the challenges faced by seniors and their families in trying to retain the services of home care workers, who have a 40% turnover rate that Stern attributes to low pay and poor benefits. He concludes, "By enacting this legislation, California can take the lead on one of the critical issues we face in our nation -- long term care -- and take the worry out of a lot of mornings for many Bay Area families" (3/23).
