House OKs Bill With $5M for UC-Riverside Medical School, Calif. Hospitals
On Friday, the U.S. House voted to approve a bill that would provide more than $5 million for an effort to develop a medical school at UC-Riverside and fund projects at several hospitals in Inland Southern California, the Riverside Press-Enterprise reports.
The bill now goes before the Senate for consideration.
UC-Riverside Medical School
The legislation would provide $3.4 million for the proposed medical school.Â
Kathy Barton, a spokesperson for UC-Riverside, said the funds would be used to purchase equipment and renovate or build new facilities.
Barton said the federal funding would not make up for money requested from the state that would have been used for development efforts.Â
UC-Riverside requested $10 million from the state but has not received the funds because of California's budget situation.
Other Hospitals
The legislation also would provide money for:
- Riverside County Regional Medical Center in Riverside;
- St. Bernardine Medical Center in San Bernardino;
- San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital in Banning; and
- Redlands Community Hospital (Nealon, Riverside Press-Enterprise, 7/24).
