INSURANCE COMMISSIONER: Legislature Unanimously Appoints Low
The California Legislature yesterday voted unanimously to appoint retired appellate Justice Harry Low as state insurance commissioner, the AP/Sacramento Bee reports. Low will assume the post vacated by former commissioner Chuck Quackenbush, who resigned under the threat of impeachment for mishandling settlements. In a vote that took less than 60 seconds, the Senate approved Low's appointment by a 34-0 margin, and the Assembly followed with a 71-0 vote. Senate Leader John Burton (D-San Francisco) said, "[Low] will restore public confidence ... in the Insurance Department." Assembly member Tom McClintock (R-Northridge) said Low's adherence to the law "is precisely what we need" (Howard, 8/25).This is part of the California Healthline Daily Edition, a summary of health policy coverage from major news organizations.
