the nation's top 100 integrated health systems in the second
edition of St. Anthony's Integrated Health Care 100 Directory.
The listing, released to HOSPITALS & HEALTH NETWORKS, ranks
regional health networks by size based primarily on gross
revenue. It also considers the number of enrollees, provider
arrangements and affiliations, inpatient admissions, outpatient
visits and hospital beds. The Integrated 100 does not consider
quality, access or community benefits. Large national networks,
like Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp. and Kaiser Permanente, are not
represented as a whole; each regional division is considered an
individual network. St. Anthony's tracked 630 integrated
systems, the same number as last year. However, those systems
had 46% more affiliations, up from 5,000 to 7,300, and accounted
for nearly "$250 billion in revenue, more than 8.6 billion
outpatient visits and more than 271 million hospital admissions."
HOSPITALS & HEALTH NETWORKS notes that while the listing is
"diverse," one common feature is its "volatility," with only five
of last year's 10 largest systems appearing in the top ten again.
TOP TEN & A CAVEAT: The list also notes the "degree of
integration" of the systems: five is full integration; four is
vertical integration, mostly centralized; three is vertical
integration, partly centralized; two is vertical integration,
inpatient-outpatient and one is horizontal integration. The
rankings are "subjective categories meant to segment the list
into reasonable comparison groups." The top ten integrated
