Job Training Programs Could Address Poverty
Training low-wage workers for jobs in nursing, construction and other industries could reduce poverty in Los Angeles, according to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (D), the Los Angeles Times reports. Villaraigosa and his advisers are working on several job training and education initiatives, which community businesses currently appear to support, according to the Times.
Mayors from across the country who met in Los Angeles Thursday for a conference on poverty also could coordinate workforce training programs with growing industries to increase wages among workers, as Villaraigosa hopes to do in Los Angeles in the health care and construction sectors (Helfand/Cleeland, Los Angeles Times, 3/30).
