Kaiser Earnings Bounce Back in 2009, But Membership Still Falls
On Friday, Kaiser Permanente announced a net profit of $2.1 billion for 2009, up from a loss of $794 million in 2008, the San Francisco Business Times reports.
Kaiser's operating revenue was $42.1 billion in 2009, up from $40.3 billion in 2008. In addition, Kaiser reported operating income of $1.6 billion for 2009, compared with $1.5 billion in 2008.
Net non-operating income amounted to $524 million in 2009, a major increase from a loss of $2.3 billion that Kaiser reported in 2008.
Although the HMO reported financial improvements, Kaiser said that membership had decreased by 64,000 last year, largely as a result of the recession. Nationwide enrollment stands at about 8.58 million (Rauber, San Francisco Business Times, 2/12).
