Lance Armstrong Stumps for Calif. Tobacco Tax Increase
Lance Armstrong is campaigning for a ballot measure that would raise the cigarette tax by $1 per pack to fund cancer research and prevention efforts. If enough signatures are collected, the measure -- sponsored by former Senate President pro Tempore Don Perata (D) -- could appear before voters as early as June. Armstrong and other supporters of the ballot measure argue that it would provide much needed funding to research groups such as the National Cancer Institute, while opponents say that a cigarette tax increase would drive residents to cross state lines to make purchases.
