Los Angeles Schools To Limit Fat, Salt and Sugar in Meals
The Los Angeles Board of Education on Tuesday unanimously approved a proposal to limit fat, sodium and sugar levels in school meals by July 2008, the Los Angeles Times reports. Schools will limit the fat content in meals will to 35 grams and the availability of foods and pastries containing high fructose corn syrup and other added sugars.
Under the proposal, the district superintendent also must increase student participation in school breakfast, lunch and summer nutrition programs and make healthier food choices -- such as fresh fruit, vegetable and salad bars -- available to students (Hayasaki, Los Angeles Times, 12/14).
