MINORITY HEALTH: Native American Clinic Files For Bankruptcy
The American Indian Clinic Inc., the parent organization for Los Angeles County's "only free health clinic and residential substance abuse treatment program" for Native Americans, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection last week. Clinic Executive Director William Beckley plans to sell the properties to repay $1 million in debt and reorganize finances before reopening the Bellflower-based health and dental clinic at a rented site in Hawaiian Gardens. He "said he hopes another Native American organization will take over the Main Artery substance abuse treatment program" that was based in Compton. The state attorney general's office is investigating charges of embezzlement brought against Beckley by the Native American Community Action Coalition. Beckley denies the allegations (Los Angeles Times, 1/8). Click here for previous CHL coverage of the clinic and rehab center.
